Senanayake Banned for illegal Bowling Action

Dubai: Sri Lanka offspinner Sachithra Senanayake has been banned from international cricket for an illegal bowling action.

According to Sri Lanka Cricket, the ICC experts analysed footage of his bowling from the fourth ODI against England last month and found the bowler's arm exceeded the 15-degree elbow extension threshold.

SLC on Saturday said it has received a report from the ICC on the matter. "The Standard ICC Illegal Action Testing Protocol was used to assess the degree of elbow extension from the point of upper arm horizontal to ball release within the bowling action," SLC said.

The 15-degree elbow extension threshold was exceeded in the four deliveries considered to be suspect in the 4th ODI played at Lord's.

The report concludes that Sachithra [Senanayake] bowled with an illegal bowling action and consequently he is banned from bowling in international cricket, effective immediately.

The ICC recently informed the Sri Lankan board that it was looking at Senanayake's bowling action following complaints from the umpires officiating at the fourth ODI.

SLC also informed the issue will be referred to its working committee. The lanky bowler was part of Sri Lanka's World T20 win in Bangladesh earlier this year. He also received plenty of headlines for his "mankading" of England wicketkeeper-batsman Jos Buttler in the aforementioned ODI series.
