England v Australia, 1st Test, Cardiff, 2nd day

Bowlers Given England Grip Against Australia

Cardiff: Australia were 264 for five in reply to England's first innings 430, a deficit of 166 runs, at the close of the second day of the first Ashes Test at Sophia Gardens on Thursday.

Shane Watson was 29 not out and nightwatchman Nathan Lyon six not out after Chris Rogers made 95.

Moeen Ali scored 77 and took two key wickets as England gained the upper hand on a tight second day of the first Ashes Test against Australia.

Ali - who had earlier helped the hosts post 430 - dismissed Steve Smith (33) and Michael Clarke (38) as Australia ended on 264-5, 166 runs behind.

Chris Rogers was Australia’s best batsman of the day, scoring 95, as wickets fell in regular intervals at the other end. This was Rogers’ 7th consecutive score of between 50 and 100 – a strange statistical detail Voges would only be half proud of.

Moeen Ali’s spin proved to be the undoing of Steven Smith (33) and Michael Clarke (38) – providing the home team with two crucial breakthroughs just as Australia looked to be settling in for a big total.

And Ben Stokes' late dismissal of Adam Voges for 31 gave England the edge.
