England v Australia, 5th Test, The Oval, 3rd day

England Collapse Again After Follow-on

London: The wicket of Alastair Cook late on day three left Australia on the brink of victory in the fifth Ashes Test at The Oval on Saturday.

Following on 332 behind, England closed day three on 203-6 after Alastair Cook fell for 85 late on, needing a further 129 to make Australia bat again.

Cook's 85-run, 234-ball vigil ended at the unlikely hands of Steven Smith, whose leg-spin snared a bat-pad catch and left England at 6-203, trailing Australia by 129 runs after being made to follow on earlier in the day.

Jos Buttler (33) and Mark Wood (0) were the not out batsmen, the latter surprisingly coming to the middle ahead of allrounder Moeen Ali.

Michael Clarke enforced the follow-on for the first time in his Test career, emboldened by Australia's first-innings lead of 332.

Adam Lyth (10) and Ian Bell (13) continued their disappointing series, while Joe Root (11) made it a disappointing double to end his terrific series on a low note.

Earlier, Wood and Ali added 42 to England's overnight score in eight overs before Clarke threw the ball to Johnson, when their resistance came to an abrupt end, as the left-armer removed the pair with consecutive balls in his first over.

Clarke had a quick chat with his teammates after the 10th wicket before asking England to bat again, and the decision looks likely to bear fruit at some stage on day four.

But England, who have an unassailable 3-1 lead in the series, may be rescued by rain forecast for Sunday afternoon.

Earlier, Moeen Ali and Mark Wood added 57 for the ninth wicket before the hosts were bowled out for 149.
