Sarfraz Ahmed Named Pakistan T20 Captain

Lahore: Sarfraz Ahmed has been confirmed as Pakistan's new Twenty20 captain.

Shahid Afridi stepped aside on Sunday, while coach Waqar Younis resigned a day later following disappointing showings in the Asia Cup and World Twenty20.

Pakistan won just three games across the two tournaments, exiting the latter at the Super 10 stage, with Waqar subsequently criticising both the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and Afridi.

Wicketkeeper Sarfraz steps up from his role as vice-captain - a position he also occupies with the One-Day International team.

PCB chairman Shahryar Khan commented: "I spoke to Sarfraz this morning and conveyed to him that he was our natural choice for this position.

"His appointment is open-ended. I wish him good luck in his new role."

Sarfraz has made 21 T20 appearances for Pakistan, scoring 291 runs.
