South Africa v Australia, 1st ODI, Centurion

Hurricane de Kock destroys Australia

Centurion: South Africa have thrashed Australia in the opening ODI at SuperSport Park, Centurion thanks to a stunning 178 from opener Quinton de Kock.

In-form batsman George Bailey made 74 and John Hastings 51 to help Australia to 9-294 in the opening ODI of their five-match series at SuperSport Park, Centurion.

South Africa captain Faf du Plessis has won the toss and elected to bowl, the home side without an ill Hashim Amla, and the Aussies raced to 64 inside 10 overs before David Warner fell for 40 (36).

Aaron Finch (33), in for Usman Khawaja, and Steve Smith (8) fell in quick succession, the former somewhat controversially after standing his ground following a low-to-ground catch from Wayne Parnell at short fine leg.

After multiple replays, Finch was sent on his way, handing debutant paceman Andile Phehlukwayo (4-44) a maiden international wicket.

Smith was out lbw in the same over and wasted a review, before Mitchell Marsh, who looked in fine fettle in racing to 31, edged Phehlukwayo through to a diving Quinton de Kock, who held a spectacular grab.

Travis Head was far from the first left-hander to come unstuck by an Imran Tahir wrong'un, while Matthew Wade was out a short while later when Bailey called for a super-risky single and David Miller swooped in with a direct hit to leave the keeper-batsman well short.

Bailey and Hastings then set about putting together a steadying 79-run stand - the best for the seventh wicket by an Australian pair in South Africa.

Hastings kicked on to post a maiden half-century as the duo pushed the visitors towards 300.

Both sides recorded comfortable wins over Ireland in the build-up to this series, with South Australia quick Daniel Worrall debuting for the Australians.
