SRH vs DD - 36th match, Hyderabad

Williamson, Pathan guide Sunrisers to victory

Sunrisers Hyderabad 164 for 3 (Hales 45, Dhawan 33, Williamson 32*, Pathan 27*, Mishra 2-19) beat Delhi Daredevils 163 for 5 (Shaw 66, Iyer 44, Rashid 2-23) by 7 wickets

Hyderabad: Sunrisers Hyderabad move past Delhi Daredevils by 7 wickets Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Hyderabad on Saturday.

Sunrisers now the table-toppers, whereas Delhi move closer to elimination.

In pursuit of 168, SRH openers laid the foundation and the finishing touch was provided by skipper Kane Williamson and Yusuf Pathan (27 not out).

Williamson’s rich vein of form ensured SRH their seventh victory. He also prevented SRH’s lower order from exposure, and took maximum responsibility of the chase.

Alex Hales and Shikhar Dhawan commenced the innings by handling Trent Boult cautiously. Boult hardly gave anything away in his first two overs.

However, Hales and Dhawan took on inexperienced Avesh Khan to up the ante.

Amit Mishra spun the odd deliveries and took the SRH duo by surprise. Hales was dismissed for a fine 45, whereas Dhawan’s stumps were rattled for 33.

On the other hand, Williamson and Manish Pandey took time to get going.

Ahead of the final four overs, DD’s inexperience came to the fore.

Boult’s second spell changed the script once again. In the 17th over, the New Zealander leaked only seven runs. Plunkett carried on the momentum with another tight over. With 29 required off 12, Pathan took his chances. He had the last laugh, against Boult, in the penultimate over.

Christian had 14 runs to play with in the last over. Eventually, Pathan’s big-hitting prevailed.

Earlier, teenaged sensation Prithvi Shaw's 65-run knock followed by skipper Shreyas Iyer's 44 helped Delhi Daredevils post a moderate 163/5.

Shaw and Iyer overcame a poor start to put together 86 runs for the second wicket after Delhi lost off-colour Glenn Maxwell cheaply.

While Shaw's knock was laced with six boundaries and three sixes off 36 balls, Iyer faced 36 deliveries, hitting three fours and couple of sixes.

Opting to bat, Delhi were off to a poor start as Maxwell (2) once again failed to contribute after being run out in the second over with Delhi's score being nine runs.

Maxwell's dismissal saw Iyer joining in-form opener Shaw in the middle and the duo helped their side recover from the early jolt taking Delhi past the 50-run mark in 5.4 overs.

DD were 95/1 after 10 overs but SRH fought back with wickets before 17 came off the last over. Vijay Shankar and Daniel Christian, who remained unbeaten, chipped in with 23.

Just when Delhi were inching closer to the triple digit score, young Afghanistan sensation Rashid Khan came with a much-needed breakthrough for the hosts. A top edge by Shaw landed safely at short third man off the leggie's delivery in the 11th over.

Incoming batter Rishabh Pant then forged a 30-run stand for the third wicket with his skipper before pacer Siddharth Kaul dismissed Iyer in the 16th over. Later, Pant (18) and Naman Ojha (1) fell cheaply in the 17th over, with the visitor's scorecard reading 134/5.

For SRH, Khan was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 2-23 while Kaul bagged a wicket for 37.
