Rahul, Curran star as Kings XI avoid bottom place

Kings XI Punjab 173 for 4 (Rahul 71, Pooran 36, Harbhajan 3-57) beat Chennai Super Kings 170 for 5 (du Plessis 96, Raina 53, Curran 3-35, Shami 2-17) by six wickets

Chandigarh: Faf du Plessis’ 96 went in vain as KL Rahul’s 36-ball 71-run innings and Sam Curran and Mohammed Shami‘s fine showing with the ball powered Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) to a six-wicket win over Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the 55th match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2019 at the PCA-IS Bindra Stadium in Mohali on Sunday.

Chasing 171-run to win, KXIP were off to a flying start as Rahul registered the third fastest fifty of IPL 2019 as he zoomed past the fifty-run mark in 19 balls. The right-hander, who opened his account with a six on the sixth ball he faced, scored 46 runs from the next 13 balls and eventually scored 71 off 36 balls.

Harbhajan Singh, who had an evening to forget. as he, despite scalping three wickets went for 57. While KXIP lost Rahul, Chirs Gayle and Mayank Agarwal in quick succession, Nicholas Pooran’s quickfire 36 helped KXIP end their season on a high.

Earlier, after put in to bat, Suresh Raina (53) and Faf du Plessis (96) struck fifties to help Chennai Super Kings reach 170/5.

CSK had a slow start to their innings with Shane Watson being dismissed for just 7 runs in the fifth over.

They reached 42 for 1 in the powerplay. In the next nine overs, leading up to the 15th over, the Raina – du Plessis partnership added another 82 runs before cutting lose in the final five overs of their innings.

Raina was dismissed for 53 by Curran in the 16th over adding a 120-run stand with the South African skipper.

CSK lost wickets in a heap in the final overs as the Punjab bowlers restricted them to well below 200 was MS Dhoni got to face only 12 balls scoring 10 runs.
