ICC U-19 World Cup

Aus-Pak Impress on Opening Day

Australia and Pakistan both recorded impressive victories as the 2012 ICC Under-19 World Cup got underway in Queensland on Saturday.

Australia v England, ICC U-19 World Cup, Townsville
In Group A, the Aussies took on old rivals England in front of a healthy crowd at Tony Ireland Stadium in Townsville, and a superb bowling performance saw them claim a six-wicket victory.

After being sent in to bat by the host nation, England never looked comfortable and were skittled for just 143.

Opening bowlers Joel Paris (2-35 off 10) and Mark Steketee (2-35 off nine) took important early wickets as danger man Daniel Bell-Drummond was out for a duck, failing to survive the first over.

Despite the gritty effort of Jamie Overton (35), wickets consistently fell, with paceman Gurinder Sandhu (3-27 off 9.3) and spinner Ashton Turner (3-30 off seven) both particularly impressive.

Australia had to negotiate a tricky seven-over period before lunch and openers Jimmy Pierson (zero) and Cameron Bancroft (two) both fell early, with the former falling to a yorker that broke middle stump in half.

The hosts went to lunch at 3-30 and that became 4-54 before Travis Head (57) and captain Will Bosisto (35) steered them home.

Afghanistan v Pakistan, ICC U-19 World Cup, Buderim
In Group B, Pakistan recorded an impressive 109-run win over Afghanistan on the Sunshine Coast.

Captain Babar Azam (75) set up the innings for the winners, with Muhammad Nawaz (66) and Umar Waheed (43 not out) putting on the finishing touches as they posted a score of 6-253.

It proved too much for Bangladesh despite their bright start with Pakistan's 17-year-old Zia-ul-Haq (4-30 off 8.1) a consistent threat with the ball.

He dismissed both Afghan openers and despite Hashmatullah Shaidi (50) looking good at the crease, it was left to too few to carry the innings.

After being 4-111 at one stage, Afghanistan lost their last six wickets for just 33 runs as Pakistan romped to a comfortable victory.

Bangladesh v Sri Lanka, ICC U-19 World Cup, Brisbane
Bangladesh joined Australia and Pakistan on the winners list after their 25-run triumph against Sri Lanka in the Group D clash at Allan Border Field in Brisbane.

Anamul Haque (101) and Asif Ahmed (84) starred with the bat for the winners as they posted 7-249 from their 50 overs.

In response, Sri Lanka were bowled out for 224 with Taskin Ahmed (2-44 off 10) and Soumya Sarkar (3-10 off 1.4) impressing.

Papua New Guinea v Zimbabwe, ICC U-19 World Cup, Townsville
In Saturday's other match, Zimbabwe notched a 104-run Group D win over Papua New Guinea in Townsville.

The action continues on Sunday with India to meet West Indies, while England play Ireland, South Africa take on Bangladesh and New Zealand battle Scotland.
