Tri-series in Bangladesh, 2009

Bangladesh vs Zimbabwe 1st Match at Mirpur

Mirpur: Bangladesh face Zimbabwe in the first match of the Tri nation tournament on Saturday at Mirpur, which can be surmised as a battle of the scrapdiggers. Bangladesh would be looking to erase the memory of their humiliating Test series defeat to Sri Lanka and start afresh in the abridged version of the game.

They will depend a lot on their mercurial captain Ashraful to post a huge total, also Shakibul Hassan will be raring to go after his standout performances in the Test series. The bowling would largely depend on the fire power of Mashrafe Mortaza to provide them early breakthroughs.

On the other hand Zimbabwe would be looking to Hamilton Masakadza and Vusi Sibanda to give them a good start. But their hopes largely rest on the dimunitive Tatenda Taibu who is their batting mainstay. Their bowling looks a fairly inexperienced lot with only left arm spinner Ray Price capable of taking wickets.

Bangladesh have named 19-year-old uncapped pacer Rubel Hossain to face the Sri Lankans in the first match of the tri series starting on Saturday in Dhaka.

Batsman Malcolm Waller (he is the son of former Zimbabwe international Andy) and wicketkeeper Forster Mutizwa are the two new faces in the 15-man Zimbabwe squad. Sean Williams, who quit international cricket this year citing frustration but returned to play in the Sri Lanka series, has also been retained.

Head to head: Zimbabwe win: 18, Bangladesh 15
