Gayle Knock Out India From World T20

Barbados: Skipper Chris Gayle (98) led West Indies from the front to beat India by 14 runs in their crucial World T20 Super Eights match at the Kensington Oval on Sunday.

Gayle struck five fours and seven sixes in his entertaining 98 from 66 balls, as West Indies, sent in to bat, reached 169 for six in their 20 overs.

Chasing a challenging target of 170 in the must-win game, India lost wickets at regular intervals and failed to build any momentum in their chase and managed only 155/9 in 20 overs.

Windies pacer put India to the back-foot early by taking the wickets of openers Gautum Gambhir and Murali Vijay in consecutive overs as India were reduced to 27/2 in 4.4 overs.

Suresh Raina (32) top-scored for the visitors as he hit four fours and a six in his 25-ball knock. Skipper MS Dhoni (29) slammed two fours and two sixes in his quick-fire 18-ball inning before he was run out in the penultimate overs.

Earlier, West Indies captain Chris Gayle was run out on 98 as the hosts set a 170-run target for India in their must-win Super Eight clash in Barbados.

Ashish Nehra dismissed Dwayne Bravo and Ramnaresh Sarwan in the last over and Gayle was also run out in the same over while trying hard to complete his second run.

Gayle's swashbuckling knock came off 66 balls and was studded with 7 sixes and 5 fours.

Put in to bat, West Indies got off to a slow start as Indian spinners bowled well on a turning and bouncy pitch as the hosts brought up their 50 in the ninth over.

Nehra had Shivnarine Chanderpaul caught behind by MS Dhoni soon after Gayle brought up his half-century off 41 balls.

Gayle then took charge of the proceedings enbaling the West Indies to cross the 100-run mark in the 14th over -- the second fifty coming off 29 deliveries.

Ravindra Jadeja then had Darren Sammy caught by Murali Vijay at long-on even as Gayle looked set for his second T20I century.

Kieron Pollard hit 2 sixes in his 11-ball 17 before he was caught at deep mid-wicket by Yusuf Pathan off Zaheer Khan.
