Hayden Muscles Sets Up First Victory for Chennai

Port Elizabeth: Chennai Super Kings registered their first victory of the tournament when they beat Bangalore Royal Challengers by 92 runs in the 5th match of the second season of the IPL at St George's Park in Port Elizabeth on Monday.

Man of the Match Muttiah Muralitharan took 3 for 11 as Bangalore were bowled out for 87 runs in 15.2 overs with Rahul Dravid being the last wicket to fall when he was caught at deep square leg by Andrew Flintoff off Lakshmipathy Balaji. Dravid hit 2 fours in his 20-run knock that came off 18 balls.

Mathew Hayden den's blitzkrieg 65 (35b, 9x4, 2x6) enabled MS Dhon's team Chennai to post 179, the highest total as far in IPL 2, before romping to a mammoth 92-run victory over the Royal Challengers here on Monday.

Chasing the daunting total, Royal Challengers succumbed for only 87 in 15.2 overs, withJacques Kallis top-scoring with 24 and Muttiah Muralitharan picking up three crucial wickets for only 11 runs off his four overs.

Before the game, Murali had met Challengers skipper KP in the lobby of the team hotel, warning the England ace: "Don't try your switch hit against me." Forget the switch hit, KP (0) was foxed by the wily old Lankan pro when he was caught plumb in front playing a forward defensive struke.

Earlier, Hayden made the most of a missed chance by Vinay Kumar at square leg to put Channai in the driver's seat. He was ably supported by Parthiv Patel, who being persited with despite the presence of M Vijay in the Chennai line up.

The two put on 106 in a mere 10.1 overs, which helped them reach the highest T20 score at St George's Park.

Brief Score: Chennai Super Kings 179/5 (Hayden 65) beat Bangalore Royal Challengers 87 (Murali 3-11) by 92 runs.
