New Zealand v Australia, 2nd Test, 3rd day, Hamilton

Katich Sets up Australia Take 300-run Lead Against NZ

Hamilton: Australia has taken control of the second Test against New Zealand at Seddon Park in Hamilton after some big scores helped it to 333 for 4 at stumps on day three.

A controlled century from opener Simon Katich (106) along with half centuries by Shane Watson (65) and Mike Hussey (67) saw Australia put the pressure right back on New Zealand after a disappointing first innings.

Katich and Hussey controlled much of the day after Tim Southee claimed two wickets during the morning's play to give his side a sniff of keeping the Australians under control.

Leaving for tea at 242-2 after Katich had secured his century off a very casual 262 balls, spending 232 minutes at the crease, Australia was cruising until New Zealand seamer Brent Arnel struck immediately after the break to end the important partnership.

First to go was Hussey, quickly followed by Katich after edging good deliveries from Arnel into the gloves of wicket-keeper Brendon McCullum.

But Michael Clarke and Marcus North, both finishing the day on 42 not-out, picked up where the pair left off and carried Australia through to a very respectable score by stumps.

Southee and Arnel may have been the only Kiwi wicket takers but Jeetan Patel and captain Daniel Vettori, in his 100th Test match, were holding things tight through some inexpensive spin bowling.

Earlier Southee had claimed both Watson's and Australian captain Ricky Ponting's (6) wickets to continue the brilliant form he showed in the first innings when he claimed four Aussie scalps, the visitors being skittled for just 231.

Australia had started the day at 35 without loss, a two-run lead over New Zealand after the hosts managed 264 in reply, with the visitors building on this throughout the morning until Southee struck.

Brief scores
Australia: 231 & 333 for 4 (Katich 106, Hussey 67, Watson 65)
