Netherlands Beat Kenya in World Cup Warm-up

Colombo: Ryan ten Doeschate cracked a fighting 98 not out to secure Netherlands an unlikely two-wicket victory over Kenya in a World Cup warm-up match on Tuesday.

Reduced to 130-7, the Dutch batsmen turned the match around by plundering 66 runs in their batting power play to score a confidence-boosting win.

Kenya batted first after winning the toss and scored 263-5 in 50 overs, helped by an unbeaten 126 from opener Seren Waters.

Netherlands started well with a 67-run opening stand but soon struggled after losing a series of quick wickets.

Dutch opener Alexei Kervezee faced just 33 balls for 49 runs but fell for a careless shot across line as he tried to deal with a delivery by seamer Nehemiah Odhiambo.

Thomas Odoyo took a smart catch at slip to dismiss Eric Szwarczynski for 26 runs off spinner Jimmy Kamande.

There was a short, but surprise appearance by Netherlands captain Peter Borren, who team management had earlier said would not be playing because of an abdominal strain.

However, Borren lasted just four balls, scoring one run, before being caught by Odoyo off spinner Shem Ngoche.

Kenya's veteran allrounder Steve Tikolo ran through the Netherlands middle-order and was on a hat-trick when he dismissed Wesley Barresi (10) and Tom de Grooth (0) off successive balls. Tikolo returned the best bowling figures with 4-39.

Ten Doeschate faced 92 balls, hitting three boundaries and four huge sixes, and was involved in an 82-run partnership for the eighth wicket with Atse Buurman who made 29.

The ninth-wicket pair of Ten Doeschate and Mudassar Bukhari (20) stepped up the pace with a 28-ball partnership of 52 runs to seal victory.

Ten Doeschate had earlier excelled with the ball during Kenya's innings, returning 2-47.

Kenyan opener Waters batted through the innings for his 150-ball total of 126 not out to secure his team a challenging total.

Having lost four wickets for 129, Waters and Rakep Patel shared 129 runs for the fifth wicket and amassed 57 runs in their batting power play.

Patel made 64 off 59 balls including seven boundaries.
