Melbourne: Rising stars Tim Paine and John Hastings have been ruled out of Australia's tour of South Africa due to respective finger and shoulder injuries.
Paine, capped in 26 one-day internationals and five Twenty20s for Australia, fractured his right index finger while training for Tasmania last month.
The 26-year-old fractured the same finger last year, and team physiotherapist Alex Kountouris confirmed it would sideline the wicketkeeper for their tour against the Proteas, beginning on October 13.
"Tim has been resting the injury in recent weeks but is still experiencing considerable pain. His surgeon has advised that the fracture is healing slower than expected and may not heal without surgical intervention," Kountouris said in a Cricket Australia statement.
Paceman Hastings also picked up his injury while training with state side Victoria, after representing Australia in the one-day series against Sri Lanka on the sub-continent in August.
The imposing right-armer injured his bowling arm while training with the Bushrangers, and will undergo surgery which will likely see him miss the Australian domestic season.
"John Hastings injured his right shoulder during a training session with Cricket Victoria after returning from Australian duties in Sri Lanka. He has had ongoing shoulder pain since this incident and has been unable to return to training," Kountouris added.
