Pakistan Seeks Clearance on World Cup Squad

Karachi: Pakistan on Wednesday deferred announcing its one-day team for a New Zealand tour and a preliminary squad for next month's World Cup pending clearance of players caught up in the spot-fixing scandal.

"A meeting of the selection committee and integrity committee was held in Lahore and all the issues relating to the clearance of players came under discussion," a Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) statement said.

"The committee decided that further consideration of this matter is required. The one-day squad for New Zealand and that for World Cup will be announced at a later date."

Pakistan has until December 19 to announce a preliminary 30-man squad for the World Cup to be jointly held in India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh from February 19-April 2. The preliminary squad should be trimmed to 15 by January 19.

Before the World Cup, Pakistan tours New Zealand for three Twenty20 matches, two Tests and six one-day internationals. The Twenty20 and Test squads have already been announced.

The PCB has not yet cleared wicket-keeper batsman Kamran Akmal, allrounder Shoaib Malik and leg-spinner Danish Kaneria, who were named in connection with spot-fixing allegations that marred Pakistan's tour of England in September.

Three Pakistani players -- Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Aamer -- were suspended by the International Cricket Council (ICC) over charges of spot-fixing during the Lord's Test against England in August.

Those three players appear before an ICC anti-corruption tribunal in Doha, Qatar from January 6-11 and face severe punishments, including lengthy bans.

Following the spot-fixing controversy the ICC directed the PCB to take strict measures, including the formation of an integrity committee to examine suspicions against their players.

The PCB also introduced a new players' code of conduct with stricter punishments for corruption.

Reports in Pakistani media last month suggested the PCB needed to seek clearance from the ICC before choosing some players, including Malik, Kamran and Kaneria.
