Pakistan to Announce T20 WC Squad on March 8

Karachi: Pakistan’s national selection committee headed by its new chairman Mohsin Hasan Khan will meet on Monday to announce the final 15-member squad for the Twenty20 World Cup to be held in the West Indies this year.

The selection committee has already named 30 players in the preliminary squad but will finalise the 15 after taking into consideration the performance of players in the ongoing National Twenty20 championship.

No big surprises are expected in the 15-member squad as the selectors have already omitted fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar and experienced batsman Faisal Iqbal from the preliminary squad.

Interestingly their omission comes at a time when Shoaib looked lean while playing one match in the national Twenyt20 tournament and Faisal has in recent weeks been on a scoring spree in this format of the game at the domestic level.

Both the players have said they are disappointed at their omissions from the preliminary squad and Shoaib made the point that in the past the selectors had changed players in the preliminary squad after sending it to the ICC giving the example of Abdul Razzaq being drafted into the Pakistan team at the last moment in the last Twenty20 World Cup in England.

But a member of the national selection committee said they were no chances of the 30 being changed as no player outside the preliminary squad had given any outstanding performances in the national T20 event.

"I don't see any changes being made and we will select the final 15 from these same 30 players," he said.
