Rain Threatens England Opener Against Netherlands

Nagpur: It seems there is a special connection between rains and cricket in Nagpur. Whenever there is an international match, more often than not it rains in the Orange City. Continuing with this uncanny coincidence, there was a heavy drizzle on Sunday morning which surprised England and Netherlands players, who will launch their World Cup campaign at the VCA Jamtha Stadium on Tuesday.

However, the Met office forecasts the sky will be clear by Monday morning and there is no possibility of rains over the next two days.

The England team skipped practice session and opted to rest in the comfort of their hotel rooms, the team management is well aware of the sudden change in weather.

The Netherlands team had a three-hour practice session at the VCA Jamtha ground and luckily for them rains did not hamper their training. Just after their nets session at around 12.30 pm, the heavens opened up.

The ground staff covered the pitch area and the surrounding field. VCA president Sudhir Dabir, secretary Prakash Dixit, curator Praveen Hinganikar and other VCA officials were monitoring the developments at Jamtha and accordingly told the groundsmen which areas to cover.

The VCA officials are confident that rains will not affect the match. Their confidence is based on the fact that there is an excellent drainage system in store at Jamtha.

Netherlands coach Peter Drinnen welcomed the chilly weather but said he would love to play a match against England rather than a washout. "I have my jacket on today. It is certainly cold here.

The chill suits us since we have come from sub-zero temperature. But we will certainly want the match to happen rather than sharing the points. A curtailed game will benefit us because most of the players are used to playing Twenty20 cricket," said Drinnen.
