Taylor Blasts Bangalore Hopes Alive For Semis

Centurion: Man of the match and hero of the day Ross Taylor won the battle of the Kiwis as Bangalore Royal Challengers beat Kolkata Knight Riders by 6 wickets to win the 41st match of the second edition of the Indian Premier League at SuperSport Park in Centurion on Tuesday.

RCB achieved the victory target of 174 runs with 4 balls to spare as Taylor smashed 5 sixes and 7 fours in his unbeaten 81-run knock that came off 33 balls.

Taylor and Mark Boucher put up an unbeaten 54-run partnership for the fifth wicket as Bangalore kept their semi-final hopes alive.

Earlier, Kumble won the toss and decided to field, but two partnerships involving Brendon McCullum, the first with with David Hussey and the next with Angelo Mathews, helped Kolkata Knight Riders overcome a shaky start and post a challenging total on a sluggish surface in Centurion.

Bangalore held the early advantage by way of a double-strike from opening bowler R Vinay Kumar, who removed Sourav Ganguly and Arindam Ghosh in fairly quick succession. But McCullum fought through a patchy phase and changed gears following Hussey's dismissal to hand his team its most satisfying batting performance of the season.

Brendon McCullum hit an unbeaten 84 as Kolkata Knight Riders notched up their highest total in this IPL.

Hitting his maiden IPL half-century, McCullum carried his bat through the innings and his knock came off 64 balls and was studded with 2 sixes and 10 fours.

David Hussey, playing the first match of this IPL, hit 2 sixes and 3 fours in his 27-ball 43 and added 70 runs for the third wicket with McCullum before he was clean bowled by Balachandra Akhil, while going for a big hit.

Brief Score: Royal Challengers Bangalore 176/4 (Taylor 81*, Kartik 2-28) beat Kolkata Knight Riders 173/4 (McCullum 84*, Hussey 43, Vinay Kumar 2-33) by six wickets.
