Teams to Fly to West Indies by Chartered Flights

Dubai: As global air traffic remains disrupted due to volcanic plumes in the European skies, the participating teams in the World Twenty20 will be directly air-lifted to the Caribbean from Dubai.

The International Cricket Council has prepared the contingency plan to bring all the teams, television crew and support staff in time in the West Indies for the tournament, beginning April 30.

"Ireland, Zimbabwe and host team West Indies are in the Caribbean already but the Board heard that arrangements were being made so that seven of the remaining eight affected men's teams could be airlifted direct to the West Indies from Dubai with the aid of ICC partners Emirates," an ICC release said.

New Zealand are travelling via the United States, the release added.

"We are doing everything possible to overcome the airline logistical challenges and we are extremely grateful to our commercial partner Emirates for putting forward a charter-flight option," ICC chief executive Haroon Lorgat said.

The plan was prepared by the ICC Executive team and approved by the Board in its meeting on Tuesday.
