West Indies v Zimbabwe, Twenty20, Port of Spain

WI vs Zim Twenty20 - West Indies and Zimbabwe Set For T20 Opener

Port of Spain: The Twenty20 International between Zimbabwe and West Indies on Sunday at Queen's Park Oval will be extra special for several reasons.

It will be the first time that the two teams will be meeting in this format of the game, since it was introduced at the international level six years ago.

For Zimbabwe, they are hoping to give further evidence to justify their re-entry into Test cricket.

It is also their first T20 International, since they crushed Canada by 109 runs on October 13, 2008 to take third place in a quadrangular tournament in Toronto which also included World champions Pakistan and Asian rivals Sri Lanka.

For West Indies, they are looking to rebound from the recent debacle in Australia, where they were swept in a series of One-day and T20 Internationals.

Also, both teams have made significant changes to their coaching staff in their attempts to turn around their fortunes.

Zimbabwe have turned to former England batsman Alan Butcher, but he will not arrive in the Caribbean until just before the third ODI between the two sides on March 12 in St. Vincent.

Ottis Gibson quit his comfortable and highly successful job as England bowling coach to return to the Caribbean and tackle the strenuous task of reviving West Indies.

This all forms the backdrop for the clash which is the precursor for the five ODIs that follow and form the main platform for the series.

One of the advantages for Zimbabwe is that they have gone about their business in international cricket mostly under the radar, and the real quality of most of their players would be unknown to West Indies.

But the question remains whether they have enough firepower to topple a West Indies side boosted by the return of four seasoned players, yet still not at full strength.

West Indies' batting - so much a letdown in the series in Australia - has been fortified with the return from injury of Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Adrian Barath, and Darren Bravo, Dwayne Bravo's younger brother; and beanpole left-arm spinner Sulieman Benn gives the bowling an edge.

This will be the second T20 International staged at Queen's Park Oval, following last year's six-wicket victory for West Indies over Andrew Strauss' England in a low-scoring affair.

Team news

West Indies: Chris Gayle however, has been given compassionate leave to attend to his ill mother, Ramnaresh Sarwan only made his return to competitive cricket on Friday in the final round of the domestic first-class competition, while key all-rounder Dwayne Bravo, as well as key strike bowlers Fidel Edwards and Jerome Taylor remain on the "injureds" list.

Squad (from): Denesh Ramdin (captain), Adrian Barath, Sulieman Benn, Dave Bernard Jr, Darren Bravo, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Andre Fletcher, Nikita Miller, Kieron Pollard, Ravi Rampaul, Kemar Roach, Darren Sammy, Dwayne Smith

Zimbabwe: It's true that their captain Prosper Utseya, left-arm spinner Ray Price, and batsman Brendan Taylor - all of whom missed Friday's match - should add a bit more backbone to the line-up.

Squad (from): Prosper Utseya (captain), Hamilton Masakadza (vice-captain), Elton Chigumbura, Charles Coventry, Graeme Cremer, Kyle Jarvis, Greg Lamb, Tim Maruma, Shingirai Masakadza, Stuart Matsikenyeri, Chris Mpofu, Ray Price, Vusimuzi Sibanda, Tatenda Taibu, Brendan Taylor
