Bangladesh v West Indies, 2nd Test, Khulna, 1st day

No.10 Abul Hasan Scores Ton on Debut

Khulna: Debutant No.10 Abul Hasan smashed the most remarkable of centuries to take the hosts to 365 for 8 at stumps on day 1 of 2nd Test against West Indies at Khulna on Wednesday.

Hasan ended unbeaten on 100 after adding an invaluable 172 with Mohammad Mahmudullah (72) to help the home team, which won the toss, fight back from a shaky 193 for 8. Abul Hasan smashes 13 boundaries and three sixes in 108-ball knock.

Earlier, West Indian spinner Veerasammy Permaul ended a brisk knock of 52 by Nasir Hossain to leave Bangladesh tottering at 186-6 at tea.

Hossain's dominating 68-ball knock with eight boundaries and a six ended three overs before tea, breaking a solid 87-run partnership between him and captain Mushfiqur Rahim that lifted Bangladesh from a precarious 98-5.

Bangladesh, who won the toss and batted, partly recovered through Hossain who followed his 96 in the first Test with another aggressive half-century before losing his patience and getting caught at mid-on.

West Indian captain Darren Sammy had helped derail the home team by dismissing Shahariar Nafees (26), opener Tamim Iqbal (32) in quick succession in the morning.

It was fellow paceman Fidel Edwards who further reduced the home team in the second over after lunch, removing first Test centurion Naeem Islam (16) and star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan (17) in successive overs.

Bangladesh, who trail 0-1 in the series after losing the first Test by 77 runs in Dhaka, never got the desired start to kick off strongly in the match they needed to win to level the series.

Nazimuddin, brought in for failed opener Junaid Siddique, fell to a short ball from paceman Edwards -- replacing Ravi Rampaul in the tourists' line-up -- in the third over of the innings after scoring just four.

Iqbal and Nafees batted sensibly to add 59 for the second wicket but Sammy struck twice to give the West Indies the upper hand.

Nafees edged a wide delivery to the wicket-keeper while Iqbal was bowled off a sharp incoming delivery.

Fast bowler Fidel Edwards finished with 5-81.

West Indies lead the two-Test series 1-0 following their 77-run win in last week's first Test in Dhaka
