Hyderabad: David Warner's first game of the tournament as opener turned into a memorable one as he played a leading role in Sunrisers Hyderabad's successful run chase against Royal Challengers Bangalore, both teams stay alive with silly chance.
After a good bowling effort had made use of a sluggish surface on which there was a good amount of turn, keeping RCB to 160 for 6, Warner's innovative batting helped SRH to their best start of the season, in the company of Shikhar Dhawan (50), and left RCB rattled.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar's wickets at either end of an shaky innings helped restrict RCB to what appeared a competitive total but the target was overwhelmed comfortably, thanks to Dhawan and Warner's 100-run alliance.
Dhawan started SRH's chase in attacking manner by clattering four fours and a six inside three overs, the pick of the lot a swivelled pull off Varun Aaron that sailed over backward square leg. Having faced four balls during this passage, Warner started the fourth with a lofted straight drive off Mitchell Starc and kept up this tempo as SRH took 51 off the Powerplay.
When Warner exploded with three sixes in the space of four balls, including two in a row off Yuzvendra Chahal, RCB looked flustered. Dhawan's run out for 50 off 39 balls was a momentary setback before Warner, in the company of Naman Ojha, took SRH to within 34 runs of victory. Ojha (24) departed 11 shy of the finish line, but that was the last hiccup as Aaron Finch and Darren Sammy finished the chase with two deliveries remaining.
That SRH had to chase 161 owed to a limp batting display from RCB after Kohli chose to bat. Rocked in the opening over when Bhuvneshwar trapped Parthiv Patel lbw, the visitors were hurt more by Chris Gayle's 20-ball 40 that left Virat Kohli and Yuvraj Singh with a repair job. First ball from legspinner Karn Sharma, Gayle's booming swipe ballooned to short third man.
With Sharma and offspinner Parvez Rasool - in for Amit Mishra - not allowing room to drive or cut, Yuvraj was at odds to combat the spin combo; torn between attack and accumulation, he offered four chances in his first 23 deliveries faced.
On one, he popped an on-drive perilously short of mid-on and two deliveries later top-edged a slog-sweep off Sharma inches in front of a diving deep midwicket. Moments afterwards, an aerial drive against Venugopal Rao landed before Aaron Finch at long-off. As the first strategic break rolled around, Yuvraj had thrice escaped being caught off spin. On 15, a mistimed whip over mid-on was spilled by a running Dale Steyn at wide long-on and went for six.
Kohli broke the shackles with two sixes and a four off Sharma in the 12th over, taking RCB's run rate past six and raising the 50-run stand in 43 deliveries, but Yuvraj's unconvincing innings ended when Steyn held a low catch at long-on. He made 21 off 25 balls before becoming Rasool's first wicket in an SRH jersey and second overall.
At 141 in 17.2 overs, RCB would have had their mind on 170 but the wickets of Kohli, caught in the deep attempting his fifth six, and AB de Villiers, bowled by Bhuvneshwar for a 17-ball 29, snuffed out such aspirations.
Earlier, Royal Challengers Bangalore captain Virat Kohli won the toss and opted to bat first.
SRH made 2 changes by bringing in Parvez Rasool in place of Amit Mishra and Venugopal Rao came in place of Lokesh Rahul. RCB unchanged.
