Ganguly, Dalmiya Condole Death of State Sports Minister

Kolkata: Sourav Ganguly on Monday condoled the death of Sports minister Subhas Chakraborty, terming it a great loss to the sports fraternity.

"He made immense contribution to football. He also liked cricket and all sport disciplines. Every sportsperson is indebted to him," Ganguly said.

"From a personal point of view, we had a good relation and he shared my emotions and was part of my success as well. When I was felicitated at Eden Gardens after my retirement, he was among the guests and it was a memorable moment," he said.

Recalling his last meeting with the sports minister, the Bengal ace cricketer said, "I had spoken to him during the Aila charity match in Barasat (on July 12). He was looking frail and I had advised him to take proper medication for his health."

Chakraborty, during the football great Diego Maradona's visit to the city late last year had ridiculed the suggestion of inviting Ganguly for the Argentine legend's felicitation.

"Muri aar Murki ek hoye naki? (How can a cricketer be invited for a football programme...?)"

The sports minister though during Ganguly's post retirement felicitation had described the left-hander as the 'dhruv tara' (pole star) of the state.

"It is a matter of time and it is only because of India's influential position in world cricket that the ICC is giving it time but there is no getting around WADA complaint rules," he noted.

Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) president Jagmohan Dalmiya also mourned Chakraborty's death.

"We knew each other for very long. It's a personal loss for me as well as for the fraternity. He was involved with CAB affairs directly as well as indirectly. He was a very good sports administrator and it will be difficult to fill the void."
