Tremlett to Replace Broad in England Squad

Chittagong: Fast bowler Chris Tremlett replaced the injured Stuart Broad in England's World Cup squad on Wednesday for the remainder of the tournament.

The decision by the England team management was approved by the International Cricket Council's Event Technical Committee.

Broad pulled out of the 15-strong party on Tuesday with a side strain sustained in the narrow victory over South Africa.

Tremlett also took over from Broad in England's successful Ashes campaign in Australia after the 24-year-old all-rounder sustained an abdominal tear.

"Stuart felt some discomfort following the South Africa match and our initial assessment indicated a strain to his left side," England and Wales Cricket Board chief medical officer Nick Peirce said on the board's website.

"Subsequent scans have confirmed a significant side strain injury, where the muscle attaches the rib, that will rule him out of the remainder of the World Cup.

"This is a new injury, separate from the abdominal tear suffered during the Ashes, that requires a period of recuperation and rehabilitation and the duration of this recovery period will be determined following further assessment in the UK."

Broad is the second England player to leave the tournament early after Kevin Pietersen pulled out with a hernia on Monday. He was replaced by Eoin Morgan.
