Scotland v Canada, ICC WC qualifier, Christchurch

MacLeod Blitz Takes Scotland into Super Sixes

Christchurch: Canada's dismal run in the ICC World Cup Qualifier tournament continued as it crashed to a 170-run loss to Scotland at Hagley Oval in Christchurch on Thursday.

Canada never looked to be on track during its mammoth chase of 342, with Hamza Tariq waging a lone battle batting at No. 7, as Scotland picked up wickets at regular intervals to finish the innings inside 40 overs. As many as seven batsmen failed to reach double figures, with Canada eventually folding for 171.

Rob Taylor, Ian Wardlaw and Safyaan Sharif struck twice each for Scotland, while Calum MacLeod and Majid Haq claimed one wicket apiece.

Earlier, Scotland marched to a formidable 341 for 9 courtesy a swashbuckling 141-ball 175 from MacLeod, who took the bowling apart smashing 14 fours and five sixes. Matt Machan complemented MacLeod with a steady 68 for a second-wicket partnership of 144, before Nitish Kumar had him caught by Harvir Baidwan in the 28th over. Kumar struck once again in the 32nd over to bring Freddie Coleman to the crease, but Coleman struck 40 off 35 balls to further dent Canada's chances.

MacLeod finally perished in the 46th over with Scotland 307 for 5, with Khurram Chohan picking up his second wicket of the match. Chohan went on to bag three more to finish with figures of 5 for 68, one of the only bright sparks on the day for Canada.

Scotland thereby ended top of Group A with three wins under its belt out of the four matches.
