South Africa World Cup Preliminary Squad Announced

Johannesburg: South Africa's selection committee has offered 2015 ICC World Cup lifelines to sidelined left-arm fast bowler Lonwabo Tsotsobe and left-arm spinner Robin Peterson, while keeping the uncapped pace prospect Kagiso Rabada in the fray for selection after naming them in the preliminary squad for next year's mega event.

Cricket South Africa (CSA) today named the pool of 30 as required by the tournament regulations, with the final 15 players due to be named in January.

Tsotsobe, 30, last featured for South Africa in a Twenty20 international in March and has not played an ODI since December, but having recovered from an ankle injury and is currently the leading wicket-taker in the Momentum One Day Cup, with 12 victims from six matches at an average of 18.08.

Peterson, a day after being recalled to South Africa's Test squad, also has a chance to push for World Cup selection as a spin-bowling allrounder to rival legspinner Imran Tahir. Peterson, 35, returned to the ODI team for the first time since November 2013 on the recent tour of Australia, as a replacement for the injured spinner Aaron Phangiso - and took five wickets in two games with 4/32 coming in his last appearance in Sydney. He has played 79 ODIs across a career that began in 2002.

Phangiso, the Lions left-arm spinner who has played 12 ODIs, has also been named in the probables. He did not go to Australia because of a finger injury.

The 19-year-old Rabada has not played an ODI but debuted for South Africa in the recent T20Is in Australia. The rookie seam bowler has already been compared to a young Dale Steyn and his success in this year's Under-19 World Cup, where his 14 wickets were massive in South Africa winning the title, has clearly impressed the selectors.

South Africa are in Pool B at the World Cup, alongside Zimbabwe, India, West Indies, Ireland, Pakistan and UAE. They play their first match against Zimbabwe in Hamilton on February 15.
