Afghanistan 30-man World Cup Preliminary Squad

Kabul: Afghanistan announced a 30-man squad for the 2015 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

There were no major surprises in the team with most of the regular names featuring in the squad. This will be Afghanistan's first appearance in the 50-over World Cup, after featuring in the 2010 and 2012 World Twenty20 editions.

Afghanistan are in Pool A, along with New Zealand, Sri Lanka, Australia, England, Scotland and Bangladesh. They will play their opening game against Bangladesh on February 18 at the Manuka Oval in Canberra.

Their rapid ascent from the fifth division of world cricket to qualifying for the World Cup has been regarded as one of cricket's biggest success stories.

The team created some ripples in March 2014 when they defeated Bangladesh in the Asia Cup. During the series against Zimbabwe in July, they drew the four-match ODI series 2-2 after losing the first two matches. Afghanistan's good year continued when they won the Silver medal in the Asian Games in Incheon.
