India in Champions Trophy

India, one of the initial participants of the ICC Champions Trophy, has won the championship only once. Even in that case, the final was washed out by rain twice and the team had to share the win with Sri Lanka. Apart from that, it lost the semi-finals as well as the finals once, while twice, it missed the chance to compete in the semi-finals altogether. 1998 - Bangladesh
Squad: Mohammad Azharuddin (captain), Ajit Agarkar, Nikhil Chopra, Rahul Dravid, Sourav Ganguly, Ajay Jadeja, Sunil Joshi, Anil Kumble, V. V. S. Laxman, Nayan Mongia, Venkatesh Prasad, Robin Singh, Javagal Srinath, Sachin Tendulkar.

Performance: In the debut tournament of Champions Trophy, known as ICC KnockOut Trophy, India won the quarter final match, against Australia, and reserved a place in the semi-finals. However, it could not win the next match (against West Indies) and lost the chance to compete in the finals.

2000 - Kenya
Squad: Sourav Ganguly (captain), Sachin Tendulkar, Ajit Agarkar, Hemang Badani, Rahul Dravid, Vinod Kambli, Anil Kumble, Sunil Joshi, Robin Singh, Yuvraj Singh, Sridharan Sriram, Venkatesh Prasad, Vijay Dahiya (wicket keeper), Zaheer Khan.

Performance: The second edition of ICC Champions Trophy (2002) started with the pre-quarter finals, in which India beat Kenya by eight wickets. Following that, the team went on to win the quarter finals (against Australia) as well as semi-finals (against South Africa). However, it lost the final match to New Zealand.

2002 - Sri Lanka
Squad: Sourav Ganguly (captain), Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Dinesh Mongia, Mohammad Kaif, Anil Kumble, Harbhajan Singh, Zaheer Khan, Ajit Agarkar, Yuvraj Singh, Jai Prakash Yadav, Ashish Nehra, VVS Laxman, Javagal Srinath.

Performance: At the initial, group match stage of the 2002 Champions Trophy, India won both the matches, against Zimbabwe and England. In the semi-finals, it faced South Africa and managed to defeat them as well, thus going to the finals. However, the final was washed out by rain twice and team had to share the win with Sri Lanka, being declared the co-champion.

2004 - England
Squad: Sourav Ganguly (captain), Virender Sehwag, Rahul Dravid, VVS Laxman, Yuvraj Singh, Mohammad Kaif, Ajit Agarkar, Dinesh Karthik, Anil Kumble, Harbhajan Singh, Lakshmipathy Balaji, Ashish Nehra, Irfan Pathan, Rohan Gavaskar.

Performance: 2004 ICC Champions Trophy saw India winning the first match, against Kenya, but losing out the second one to Pakistan. With this, the team also lost a place in the semi-finals, for the first time in history of the trophy, and had to go back empty-handed.

2006 - India
Squad: Rahul Dravid (captain), Ajit Agarkar, MS Dhoni, Harbhajan Singh, Mohammad Kaif, Dinesh Mongia, Munaf Patel, Irfan Pathan, Ramesh Powar, Suresh Raina, Virender Sehwag, RP Singh, Sachin Tendulkar, Yuvraj Singh.

Performance: ICC Champions Trophy, played in the year 2006, had India losing the chance to play in the semi-finals once again. Though the team won the first match, against England, by 4 wickets, it was beaten by West Indies and Australia in the second and third one. With this, the tour came to an end for India.

2009 - South Africa
Squad: MS Dhoni (c & wk), Rahul Dravid, Gautam Gambhir (vc), Harbhajan Singh, Dinesh Karthik, Virat Kohli, Praveen Kumar, Amit Mishra, Abhishek Nayar, Ashish Nehra, Yusuf Pathan, Suresh Raina, Ishant Sharma, RP Singh, Sachin Tendulkar, Yuvraj Singh.

Performance: The 2009 edition of Champions Trophy, played in South Africa, had India losing the chance to play in the semi-finals once again. Indian team lost the first match, against Pakistan, by 54-runs, in second match washout by rain and India win last game against West Indies by 7-wickets.

2013 - England
Squad - Mahendra Singh Dhoni (captain & wk), Shikhar Dhawan, Murali Vijay, Virat Kohli, Suresh Raina, Rohit Sharma, Ravindra Jadeja, Dinesh Karthik (wk), Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Irfan Pathan, Vinay Kumar, Amit Mishra, Ravichandran Ashwin, Ishant Sharma, and Umesh Yadav.

Performance: India won the title beating England by five runs in the final. India won all the games in Champions Trophy easily. India's opener Shikhar Dhawan declared man of the series. All rounder Ravindra (12) highest wicket taker in the tournament.

2017 - England
Squad - Virat Kohli (Capt.), MS Dhoni (wk), Ajinkya Rahane, Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan, Dinesh Karthik (wk), Yuvraj Singh, Kedar Jadhav, Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mohammed Shami, Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya and Umesh Yadav

Performance: 2017 ICC Champions Trophy saw India winning the first match, against Pakistan, but losing out the second one to Sri Lanka. With third win against South Africa, the team entered into the semi-finals. India beat Bangladesh by 9-wicket in the final but in the final they have lost against Pakistan.
